Many errors here as you point out, but the reduction in life span from 75 to 40 is an absolute howler. Let us take the average number of deaths at 40,000 - cutting midway between the IDF estimates of 35,000 max and Hamas's claimed 45,000.

40,000 on a population of 2 million is 2%. Even if EVERY death was a 1 year old, meaning their whole 75 years expectancy had been robbed, this would only give you a reduction 1.5 years, meaning life expectancy would be 73.5 years rather than 75 years.

But it is likely the average death age would be 25-30, but let's take 25 for ease of calculation. This means that two-thirds of their overall life expectancy has been robbed, so 1.333% x 75 years = 0.9975 of a year, so 1 year near as. So that would mean the overall life expectancy had dropped from 75 years to 74 years... a far cry from 40 years. For that sort of drop, you'd have to kill over 40% of the population, about 800,000. Quite a giant cock-up for the Lancet.

I suppose in their defence, they're only doctors, not statisticians. My father was in fact a master statistician and did weather stats for the War Office for bombing raids over Germany, plus also later the Whittle project on jet propulsion... so I suppose some of that genetically has come down to me.

The other thing the Lancet have missed in talking about 'life expectancy' is the natural death rate. In a population of 2,000,000 divided by 75, this would mean 26,667 people would die every year from natural causes. I have read complaints that Hamas has not taken account of this and has in fact just included it all as 'down to IDF raids.'

This is a serious contingent. Even if at their higher claim of 45,000, we took this 26,667 away, we would be left with under 20,000 total.

Either way, when it comes to accurate stats both Hamas and the Lancet don't seem to know their asses from their elbows.

The Lancet may be Gaza-controlled like the UK.
